Venice lies in the centre of the lagoon of the same name, in the Adriatic Sea, and is spread over a vast territory consisting of 118 islands, many of which are interconnected.
The historic centre of Venice consists of six zones, the original sestieri that still retain their historic names: Cannaregio, Castello, Santa Croce, San Marco, San Polo and Dorsoduro. Numerous islands form part of the historical area of the city, from the islands of Giudecca to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
The Venice lagoon includes islands that have acquired a worldwide reputation over the centuries, such as Murano, the island of glass facing the San Michele cemetery and, a little further north, the rainbow island of Burano.

Piazza San Marco is the beating heart of the city of Venice and the only “square” in Venice, while the other similar urban spaces are called Campi.
This square has always hosted the most important city events and Napoleon Bonaparte called it the most beautiful living room in Europe.
The square dedicated to the Evangelist, Mark, patron saint of Venice, is home to the most impressive buildings of the city, such as the Doge's Palace, the Basilica and the Saint Mark’s bell tower.
It is trapezoidal in shape, 175 meters long and 72 meters wide and it is located in front of the Basilica of San Marco and 57 meters from the Correr Museum.
The square is the lowest area of Venice and is easily flooded on days of high tide
